Wood Blocks and Peacocks

Look what I found! SoLo, one of our favorite shops is located in Solana Beach, CA. They carry a collection of handmade items, books, jewelry, paper goods, furniture, soaps, etc...from a small group of artists. And, sweet serendipity...they had a peacock wood block!

Such possibilities...what shall I make...pillows, tablecloths, a summer skirt!

Here is a cool video from India of how to use this woodblock in printing. Wouldn't it be fun to see this in person? I would love to see how the woodblock is made also....

I think I would like to carve out some designs of my own...that will have to be in a future post. -C

A Little Trip to San Diego

Our annual girls trip to San Diego was interrupted by a "tsunami" and the sad news of the earthquake in Japan. We spent the morning on the beach, until the appointed hour of 8:40 AM when the waves were supposed to hit in Del Mar. It was bittersweet to experience the peaceful, fog of the beach considering the lives transformed and turned upside down across that ocean.

The fog lifted and the resulting warm sunshine was so welcome! May the people of Japan experience the same in the hopeful process of rebuilding. - C

You can always count on Pier One for rich, exotic colors. I love their peacock blue vase and peacock feather rug.

Love this pillow from Dwell Studio. The neutral colors are not the usual peacock fashion, but the unexpected, muted version makes a beautiful pillow.

Sundance Harvest Market is over for this year, but we have to say it is worth putting on your calendar for next. It was so much fun. I especially enjoyed the free demo and taste of freshly made pasta with a marinara made on the spot of locally grown tomatoes seasoned with fresh garlic and basil...so delicious! And then, there were the artisans with booths including pottery, jewelry, photography, handmade bags, blankets, soaps, foods, etc...all topped off with a ride up the mountain on the ski lift. The best part, though, was meeting the people who visited our booth. Thanks for coming and hope to see you next year!

Come see us at the Sundance Harvest Market! We must go where our hearts lead, so...we are working on some top secret new ideas...hint (home decor) along with some new jewelry designs with a Sundance flair.

We are so excited to be back in production after a busy summer and to be part of the Harvest Market. This is just a one day event, so be sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, Sept. 25th. The perfect combination of art and nature, there will be over 30 local artisans, live music, delicious food, fall foliage, and all in a beautiful mountain setting.

Summer Time Fun!

Bazaar Opening...

Our first day and opening night was so exhausting and so fun! We saw many crafters walking around with that tired look, and found out we were not alone in spending many nights up until 3 AM.

We were delighted by the entertainment...Mad Max and the Wild Ones from Springville. A father and his 3 sons who play rockabilly and recently returned from a 6 month tour of Singapore. We couldn't get over the lead singer, and youngest son Duke, who looked about 10, with cute little baby fat cheeks you wanted to pinch! What talent...Here is a sample from a concert they did in 2008:

Beautiful Burlap

One of our new products for the upcoming Beehive Bazaar. Rachel had some wood and burlap lying around and Cheryl had some ideas knocking around in her head. Here is the result...hope you like them. We may have to keep a few for our own walls.

The flamingo is from a painting by John James Audubon in the 1800's. Cheryl has been a fan of his since childhood! He's right up there with Jacques Cousteau! (maybe some ocean art will be next!?)

So for those of you who, like us, love to make something new out of the old...here is our first tutorial, courtesy of Carol Schneider Designs and the Daily Herald. These are so cute...love the mixed up colors and patterns.

Recycle Old T-shirts into Scarves

"Carol Schneider, a New York public-relations agent for a large book publisher, crafts scarves, children's wear and purses in her spare time. She hit upon this nifty T-shirt scarf while cruising the Internet, and made it her own by using whimsical, color-loaded Ts.

Samples of her "Reclaimed Tee Scarves" may be viewed online at Carol Schneider Designs.

Her scarves for adults measure at least 56 inches long. Since Schneider scavenges thrift stores for her T-shirts, no two scarves are alike.

You can make Schneider's scarves on the cheap: Your own castoffs and the kids' outgrown T-shirts will do, ensuring endless possibilities in color and pattern combinations.

Schneider suggests combining T-shirt swatches by theme: sports, food, music, the arts or cartoon characters.

She sells her children's scarves with jumbo safety (or diaper) pins so they can be attached to the backs of children's jackets; you don't want these clever scarves to get lost."

Supplies

• For children's scarf (approximately 48 inches long): four used T-shirts of complementary colors, at least two with a fun design or logo

• For adult's scarf (approximately 56 inches long): four to five T-shirts, depending upon the desired scarf length. Since more of the scarf is visible on adults, it's nice to use at least four scarves that have designs or logos.

• Scissors

• Thread in coordinating color

• Sewing machine

• Steam iron

Assembly

1. Front of scarf: For children's scarf, cut 7-inch-wide squares from four T-shirts to make a total length of 49 inches. For adult scarf, cut 8-inch-wide squares from four or five T-shirts to make a total length of 55 inches to 70 inches, depending upon desired length of finished scarf.

2. Back of scarf: For children's and adult scarves, cut four or five solid-colored squares of the same width from the backs of the T-shirts to make a total length matching the front.

3. For the front, pin each set of squares together in desired order and sew them together, one by one, using a 1/4-inch seam. Press. Do the same with the scarf's back squares.

4. With right sides together, pin and sew two 3/8-inch seams along the scarf's long sides, leaving the ends free. Turn right side out and press.

5. Trim ends to the same length, if necessary. Sew a zigzag stitch 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches from the bottom of each end. Cut fringe up to stitching line (without cutting the stitches).

We are so excited to once again be vendors at the Beehive Bazaar. The Spring show will be at Thanksgiving Point! It will be bigger and better than ever...and there is a sneak peak VIP night on May 5, 8-11 PM, for all those who like to get a jump on all the good stuff! Also that night you can meet the artists, listen to live music and have a great ol' time shopping for that perfect Mother's Day gift. Or, just bring your mother and have her pick out her own gift! There is a cover charge of $8 for the VIP night, but you can shop for free Thursday, May 6 - Saturday, May 8.

We introduced the "Virtue" necklace at the BB last year. Just a little reminder of the blessings of good, clean living! You will be able to find these at Deseret Book's Ladies Night in Orem (see below for info.) Quantities are limited, but we will have more at the BB in May.

We Love the Beehive Bazaar and other news

We are so excited to announce our upcoming show at the Beehive Bazaar. We have loved this unique boutique since it began and can't believe we now get to be in it! The BB will be on December 3-5, 2009 at the Women's Center on 310 W 500 N in Provo. I know it's a long wait, so we are endeavoring to get our etsy site up and running.

We've got some other exciting ideas in the works, and can hardly wait to show you...stay tuned to our blog....

We are making our debut at the Checkered Umbrella Boutique in Springville this weekend. This quaint, umbrella covered arts and crafts market will be held in the yard of an old friend, Nettie Barnett, who is one of the most creative people I know.
